A Britisher by the name Muntro was the first planter who bought 227 acres of forest area from the Travancore Maha Raja in 1887 to start the first ever tea producing company in Munnar. Tata - Kannandevan, Harissons Malayalam and Kulukkumala are the major tea producing companies owing the majority of the wide spread tea estates.
